Bee.Wise.Eco provides ecological surveys, assessments and practical advice to support planning, development and responsible land management. Our services include Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), Preliminary Roost Assessments (PRA), Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and advice, biodiversity-focused ESG support, and habitat monitoring for BNG and ESG commitments. Landscape design services are coming soon.
We combine site surveys with relevant ecological records, including Local Environmental Records Centre (LERC) data, to understand your site, identify constraints and opportunities, and recommend clear next steps.
Start early: involving ecologists at the beginning of your project allows time for records searches and seasonal surveys, helps shape your design and reduces the risk of avoidable delays.
-
Understand your site before you finalise your plans.
A PEA is an early assessment of your site’s habitats, potential for protected species and wider ecological context. We combine a site walkover with a desk study, including Local Environmental Records Centre (LERC) data, to identify constraints, opportunities and any further surveys needed. You receive clear recommendations to inform your design and next steps.
-
Identify potential bat constraints early.
Planning a renovation, conversion or demolition? A PRA assesses buildings and structures for evidence of bats and features that could support roosts. We explain the findings and whether further surveys are needed. A PRA can usually take place throughout the year, but follow-up bat surveys have seasonal windows—booking early helps avoid delays.
-
We assess your site’s habitats, calculate biodiversity value and help you identify practical options for delivering BNG. Early advice helps you retain valuable habitats and integrate habitat creation and enhancement into your layout before designs are fixed. Our support helps you understand the assessment, planning and habitat management requirements relevant to your project.
-
Turn environmental commitments into practical action.
We support the nature and biodiversity aspects of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategies. From understanding your site’s ecological baseline to identifying opportunities for habitat enhancement, we help you develop measurable actions that support your organisation’s environmental objectives.
Bee.Wise.Eco Services
Bee.Wise.Eco provides ecological surveys, assessments and practical advice for planning, development and land management. We help you understand your site, identify ecological requirements early and make informed decisions throughout your project.
Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA)
A PEA is an initial assessment of the ecological features of your site. It combines a habitat walkover with a desk study, including relevant Local Environmental Records Centre (LERC) data, to identify potential constraints, opportunities for biodiversity enhancement and any further surveys required.
What you receive:
A PEA report describing the site’s habitats and ecological context.
A habitat map.
A review of relevant species records and designated wildlife sites.
Recommendations for further surveys, mitigation and ecological enhancements.
Advice on survey timing and next steps.
A PEA helps establish what your project needs; further surveys or assessment may be required to support a planning application.
Preliminary Roost Assessment (PRA)
A PRA assesses buildings and structures for evidence of bats and features that could provide roosting opportunities. It is particularly relevant to projects involving renovation, roof works, conversions or demolition.
What you receive:
A PRA report with photographs and findings.
An assessment of potential bat roosting features.
Advice on whether further bat surveys are needed.
Recommended survey timings and practical next steps.
Initial advice on avoiding impacts and providing enhancements.
A PRA can usually be undertaken throughout the year. Any follow-up bat surveys may need to take place within specific seasonal windows.
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Services
We assess the biodiversity value of your site and help you plan habitat retention, enhancement and creation. Bringing BNG into the design process early helps you understand your options before the layout is fixed.
What you receive, depending on your project:
A baseline habitat survey and condition assessment.
Habitat mapping and biodiversity metric calculations.
A BNG assessment explaining the proposed losses and gains.
Practical recommendations for habitat retention, enhancement and creation.
Identification of any biodiversity shortfall and advice on next steps.
Biodiversity Gain Plan and Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan support, where commissioned.
Biodiversity-Focused ESG Services
We support the nature and biodiversity elements of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategies. Our advice helps organisations understand their land, identify opportunities for improvement and turn environmental ambitions into measurable actions.
What you receive:
A review of existing habitats and biodiversity opportunities.
A practical biodiversity action plan.
Recommended habitat improvements and management measures.
Proposed targets and indicators to measure progress.
Ecological evidence and summaries to support environmental reporting.
Monitoring for BNG and ESG
We assess how habitats are developing and whether management is delivering the intended outcomes. Monitoring helps identify issues early, guide corrective action and provide evidence of progress against agreed commitments.
What you receive:
A monitoring schedule linked to your agreed plan or targets.
Site visits and habitat condition assessments.
Monitoring reports with photographs and findings.
A comparison of progress against agreed objectives.
Recommendations for changes to habitat management.
Clear summaries to support BNG reporting or biodiversity-related ESG reporting.
Landscape Design — Coming Soon
Our forthcoming landscape design service will combine ecological understanding with practical design to create attractive, functional spaces that support wildlife.
Planned deliverables include:
Landscape concept plans.
Planting plans and plant schedules.
Recommendations for wildlife-friendly features.
Habitat creation and enhancement proposals.
Establishment and maintenance guidance.
The scope and availability of this service will be confirmed at launch.
Local Environmental Records Centre (LERC) Data
A site visit cannot reveal everything about a site’s ecological context. LERC data provides information on recorded protected and notable species, habitats and locally designated wildlife sites in the surrounding area.
For assessments requiring an ecological desk study, we identify the appropriate records search and use the findings alongside field survey results.
What this adds to your assessment:
A clearer understanding of local ecological sensitivities.
Better-informed recommendations for further surveys.
Evidence to support assessment and design decisions.
An absence of records does not confirm that a species is absent. The search scope, cost and expected turnaround should be established at quotation stage.
Start Early—Avoid Unnecessary Delays
Contact BWE before finalising your design or submitting your planning application. Early involvement allows time for records searches, site visits and any seasonal surveys required.
Some follow-up surveys can only be completed at particular times of year. Missing the appropriate window may mean waiting until the next suitable season.
Share your site location, proposed works and expected timescales, and we can help identify the surveys, deliverables and next steps relevant to your project.
